I miss mooching down New York streets in the dusty heat of late summer and picking out the hipsters and bettys as they go by. Sadly, it’s been a while since I clocked cut-offs and a fitted sheer lace onesie drifting over hot hard-top in my direction. This is a fucking look – and topped off with a toothy grin and some Hollywood hair. Peachy.
Summer is coming and my blood is warming…

I dig the floating cross, just hanging there in black space, and her sharp as cheese wire cheekbones. That is all.
This all happened at Last Night’s Party.

Look closely, if you can help your gaze escape the getaway sticks so slickly balanced in heavy heels and poised in coy crossover, at the structure of this breeze of a dress. It’s three shirts. Not actually, but aesthetically. A construct of layers adorned with a delicate bib and repeated cuffs easing up the arm like the beginning of a Gomez Addams make out session. If anything, it could do with being a little smaller to grip the bones of Elena up top and choke the throat, but aside from that this Viktor & Rolf creation is a refined delicacy.

Although I’m not much one for celebrity (consider my Liv post a lapse), the well dressed and perpetually cool betty does arouse my interest. A long standing hero bearing such qualities is Chloe Sevigny, she’s never not been hip. Her progressiveness in the arts has elevated forward in the world of fashion and it is always a pleasure to see her photographed, occupying the boundaries of such burns with a steely indifference and promise of as yet undiscovered illuminations… both typified by the above image from her Harper’s Bazaar shoot.
As an explanation for this mild fixation, to use Freudian terminology (probably incorrectly), a section of my dissertation created at the end of the MW university years explained at great length and endeavour the graceful acceptance and cinematic beauty of twilight through a cab window onto the face of Sevigny’s character Jenny in Larry Clark’s film Kids. Still some of my finest work I feel.
A word on the $6,800 Dior dress, ruffles have rarely looked so sharp.

Clemence is a much more recent addition to the, if such thing existed, STNF approved list. If truth be told, she is likely a passing fad, but this I must be clear is only speculation. Besides, it is not like she’ll be going anywhere soon with her fine French figure gilded in a sunburst yellow that ripples through infinite pleats. And harmonised with a soft enveloping black too… Despite this ethereal description, the folded sleeves tether everything with an earthy and rustic solidity, which is disarming and inviting simultaneously.

I liked a lot in the Emilio Pucci show, the above though was stand out. The mix of the textures is striking, with the simple and strong shape of the dress adorned with the lace detailing, creating a smouldering juxtaposition. It’s an outfit for the hard and fine figure, point those hips and shroud those collar bones with all that is good only a tug of a velvet bow away. Plus it’s got pockets, which help to keep you interestingly introverted whenever the need arises.

This is London with Mr. Newton and a betty that really does have an ‘It’s always the quiet ones’ look about her, if only due to the insane fit of those denim pants. But, then if you’ve got it… the thing is, with the knitwear on top all the boys are thinking this is conquerable. In fact, I’d wager this icon gets approached by guys who never usually dream of chatting to attractive strangers. She makes smoking hot safe…

And this is Mr. Newton in New York with more holey vest Batman action. What is there to say, STNF classic, heels, skinny jeans and an ill-fitting wife-beater. Love it.

Half of one of their looks would have properly got them noticed so, four of them stood together all in their dandiest finery is quite the statement. Ok, there is quite a bit taken from a 30s golfer, but that isn’t exactly a bad thing… in danger of making these four gents sound like wallpaper samples, my favourite is second one in from the left – I just like greys. These dudes make me want to start a fashionable foursome – we could just stand about in the vicinity of hipster hotbeds and look kinda jaunty and estranged from the hoi polloi.

Ruby Aldridge does her retro thing. Before we get to the Walkman though, you are not going to find a much better example of the layering that is going on right now. One rule, longest garment first. Lets face it too, for slinkster bettys the weather just ain’t up to scratch, stay warm, wrap up and burst out come summer. Summer will arrive I promise.
Walkmans are better than iPods, purely because you had to commit, and they made nice sounds. Flipping the tape and pressing the buttons, the mechanical comfort of clicks, rattles and clunks. To have a Walkman meant making a choice, you had to pick who and what you were going to listen to ahead of time. The iPod is passive, it requires no choice, shuffle songs and being able to carry an entire record collection are not the pinnacle. And a passive outlook on music is for bankers and the middle classes. Plus what was cooler and more energy consumption aware than rewinding a tape on a biro…

As a youngster I went to this chicks house and she had SKY, this meant MTV and while there I was left alone briefly, just me and MTV. And there I watched Aerosmith – Crazy… call me forever changed. Not only have I ever since been a devoted Aerosmith fan, but the adolescent crushes on both Silverstone and Liv have remained – it’s a nostalgic love thing.
Shot by Theo Wenner the Proenza Schouler threads are on trend. There is a mix of a hippy float and spring print held against the body by a warm breeze, combined with a more playful simplicity as above, which suggests being only a moment away from settling onto a chopper (or fixed gear for the nouvelle kids) and peddling to the corner to pick up cans of beer and strawberry laces.
Right I’m off to Harbour Island to hang with the friendly people, who’s in?

For SS 2o11 Carhartt has enrolled graffiti artist Grotesk to deal out some designs to adorn their tees. My pick of the bunch is the above, though you can see the full line up over at the Carhartt site and make your selection.
The designs are variations on the classic Carhartt ‘C’ as well as few typography specials, enjoy.
